Once upon a time, Hank Cassidy (Mike Gassaway) has been one of the
fiercest lawyers in his area - but this times are behing him, he has long
retired and since then has mostly taken care of his wife Lilian (Kelli
Ball Grant), who suffers from terminal cancer. Sill, he hasn't lost his
edge, so when his best friend Clai (Ralph Cinque) asks him to supervise
visits of his granddaughter Bonnie (Kariana Karhu) with her dad Lemarcus
(George Welder), he enthusiastically agrees. You see, Lemarcus has a
history of violence and is a convicted wifebeater - his wife of course
being Clay's daughterr Evelyn (Bobbie Grace). Now Evelyn is positively
terrified of seeing her daughter re-united with Lemarcus, and of course,
Hand has misgivings as well, but the first visit goes very well, as do
subsequent ones, as Lemarcus seems to be mellow as can be with his
daughter. Eventually, the court even allows Lemarcus to take his daughter
on trips to the park and the zoo, albeit still supervised by Hank. And
even if he doesn't like it, Hank somewhat warms up to Lemarcus, even if
his instincts as an attorney tell him otherwise. And his instincts don't
lie, as while Lemarcus's love for his daughter is sincere, he and his
girlfriend Chloe (Jennifer Gunderson) secretly plan to kidnap Bonnie, get
her out of the country and start a new life in Canada ...
Now one thing's for sure, The Pro Bono Watchman has a lot
of heart, something that's reflected not only in its plot but also in its
sincere performances by all involved and its rather unexcited directorial
effort. Now where the film stumbles a bit is in its portrayal of the main
character: Hank is just too perfect, not only is he good with children and
also his sick wife, he's also a brilliant jjudge of people, manages to
defeat people twice his size and half his age in fistfights, is handy with
a gun, and he always does the right thing, And while it sure is refreshing
to see an elderly person in the lead for once, this all is a little bit
too much. That said though, if you're up for a feelgood movie with a bit
of action and gunfights thrown in for good measure, then this one's for
you.
