After life hologram Rimmer (Chris Barrie) moves out of the quarters he
shares with Lister (Craig Charles), whohe makes responsible for all his
misfortunes, to share the room next door with his (also holographic)
duplicate, Rimmer (see last episode, Confidence
and Paranoia, on why & how he was duplicated).
At first everything seems super, as with himself, Rimmer hasn't got
anyone anymore who is dragging him down, but soon his other self is
getting on his own nerves as much as on everyone else's (& of course,
with only himself, he hasn't got anyone else to blame).
Ultimately their fighting gets so out of hand that Lister decides to
turn one of them off ... & with a heavy heart, Rimmer - well, one of
the Rimmers - accepts the decision & comes to his own termination in
full military uniform (an uniform way above his rank), but before he turns
him off, Lister makes Rimmer tell why the last words before his death (his
real death, remember he's an after life hologram) were Gazpacho Soup.
& Rimmer admits that maybe the biggest mistake in his life was that,
when he was invited to the captain's table for dinner (after a mere 14
years on board), he ordered his Gazpacho Soup to be heated up, ignorant to
the fact that it is upposed to be served cold, & he honestly thinks
that (& not Lister) ruined his career ...
Lister is almost moved, but then he tells Rimmer doesn't have to die
(he already turned off the other one), he was just curious about Gazpacho
Soup, & has now one more thing to tease Rimmer with.
This last episode of Red Dwarf's 1st series goes back to
the thing that the series was always best at: 2 characters who don't like
each other in constant arbument. & when one of these characters is
split up in 2 & these 2 can't stand each other either, it's all the
better.
