Championship wrestler Santo and his sidekick Carlitos (Carlos Suárez)
are called to the aid of their friend Irma (Irma Serrano aka La Tigresa),
a rich farmowner whose father has just died under mysterious
circumstances, and who now fears to share his fate. While investigating,
Santo falls in love with Irma, a woman handy with a whip and a shotgun
who's more than capable to take care of her own, and additionally to that,
she owns a trained eagle who saves as her lifeguard (and saves her life
more than once). Several attempts are made on Irma's and also on Santo's
life, and it doesn't take Santo long to find an obvious suspect, either,
Manuel Villafuerte (Jorge Lavat), Irma's neighbour who not only wants her
land, but also wants to beat her in whatever there is, be it cockfighting,
singing (?) or horseriding - normally without the least bit of success. But
Santo isn't easily deceived, especially when he suddenly finds himself
face to face with a distorted giant (Domingo Bazán), who almost beats him
to death. Santo soon sets his eyes on the hunchback (Jorge Patino) who
lives on Irma's premises, finds evidence against him and tries make him
confess. the hunchback does confess, too, but then the giant, who's in
league with him, kills Santo (Santo soon gets better though). Then
hunchback and son go after Irma, whom they want to kill, but not without
giving her the whole story: The hunchback is actually Irma's uncle who
always hated her father, and the giant is Irma's half-brother her father
always denied, and now he wants his revenge ... and his brother's farm and
fortune, too. However, Irma appeals to the conscience of her half-brother,
and he kills the hunchback instead of her, saving her this way. When Santo
arrives on the scene, everything is already over. A murder
mystery of the old dark house variety - complete with secret passageways
and the like - this is one of those films where masked wrestler Santo
feels oddly out of place - but his being there anyhow makes the film all
the funnier. As far as old dark house movies go, the film hardly misses a
cliché, down to the evil hunchback, so much so that it seems to have come
out of a construction kit. This is all layered over by a few dozen
showcases for Irma Serrano, who is shown as the woman who can do anything
a few times too often, and who oddly enough doesn't come across as
likeable as she should. Her story is an interesting one at least, she
had come to notoriety as the mistress of Mexican president Díaz Ordaz.
However, this notoriety led to many a film role and a singing career - and
to the nickname la Tigresa, apparently. Interestingly, much later
in life she was elected Senator for her home state of Chiapas ... In
all, definitely not a great film, possibly not even one of Santo's better
ones - but fun to watch. Animal lovers beware though, scenes of a
cockfight, a horse falling down a cliff, and Santo deliberately poisoning
a kitten (!) are not to everyone's taste (and shouldn't be).
