Armand (Achille Reggiani) has been a deadbeat for all his life, and the
fact that his father has never really acknowledged him as he was the
product of a fleeting affair has most certainly contributed to that. Now
his father has died though, without leaving Armand a penny of course, but
out of the blue, Armand's half-brother Guillaume (Arieh Worthalter) offers
him to run dad's bowling alley, which has been his dad's pride and joy,
but it really doesn't go well with Guillaume's job as a police detective.
Sure, Armand has no experience in such things, but then again Guillaume
always felt bad about his brother being left out of dad's will, so this is
the least he can do to right a wrong. And Armand proves to be ... well,
not perfect, but also not too bad at his job. And he soon attracts the
attention of young and beautiful Gloria, whom he soon enough invites to
his apartment above the bowling alley, where they have passionate sex -
and then he brutally kills her. And in an ironic twist, it's his brother
Guillaume who's investigating the case. And apparently Armand hasn't
stopped with Gloria, as soon enough more bodies turn up, all killed after
the same m.o. - a killing spree that leaves Guillaume baffled. Things come
to a head when Guillaume is suspended from duty after over-working himself
without producing any results, and he lets out his frustrations on Armand,
even firing him from his job. But it just might be that Armand still has a
few aces up his sleeve ... Now granted, this film takes a bit
for its set-up which could have almost certainly been cut down a bit, but
about half an hour in, with the first murder, that's presented in quite
some disturbing detail, the film really gains traction and turns into a
rather brilliant suspense piece, with the tension never again losing its
grip, thanks also to the things not shown - like many murders not even
shown and Armand's guilt only implied, which really works for the film
rather than against it. And a very competent cast only help making this
one really tight thriller that most certainly deserves a watch.
