Malik (Torri J. Tillman) is an upcoming black film director who wants to
make movies representing his community tofor his community. Sam (Danielle
Renee Houston) is a black cardiologist who despite her rich father (Keith
Williams) offering her a job at his clinic for the wealthy and powerful
wants to work at a clinic that focuses on her community and especially
those socially disadvantged. When the two of them meet at a club neither
of them wants to be at, their conversation initially turns awkward pretty
quickly. It's only when at the end of the evening they go for some street
food then share a cab home that they start getting to know one another -
and ultimately Sam spends the night at his place. They meet again and
again over the next few weeks, doing couple things and having sex, and are
really into one another - and yet Malik insists they just "chill"
together. However, since they've first met, Malik can't concentrate on
screenwriting anymore while helplessly witnessing how his last film fails
to connect with audiences. Then though he meets actress Anna (Shenee
Allen), who wants to be in his movie and is also interested in him, and
suddenly the words start flowing again. Actually they flow to such an
extent that he starts to neglect Sam. Also, of late he's on the phone with
Anna a lot, and even if he's very open about talking to her and Sam
doesn't suspect him of cheating on her, she can't help getting jealous -
and ultimately breaks up with him. And that's exactly the worst time for
her to find out she's pregnant ...
Now this might not be the most exciting movie, nor one filmed
to the brim with melodramatics, quite the contrary, everything's subtle,
downplayed and flows at a leisurly pace - which is exactly why this film
has such a heart-felt vibe to it, it just feels real in its
understatement. And of course a couple of leads who are likeble in their
own ways and who have great chemistry, supported by an able ensemble, also
help making A Season for Love into a pretty worthwhile
watch.
