As a little baby bug, Ryan witnessed the murder of his parents by evil
spider Liam. Since then, he has hidden in the airducts of a family home,
but as he grew older he grew increasingly more desperate to go out into
the world again and somehow learn to fly and eventually become a
butterfly. But flying is something that just eludes him, and even though
he makes fast friends with eccentric Keenan, another wannabe butterfly,
and big and strong Dylan and his sister Megan who even let him live at
theirs, Ryan feels like an outsider. And when he accidently makes a mess
out of a butterfly beauty pageant, he finds himself down on his luck ...
and then he hears of a wizard who can turn bugs into butterflies. And the
wizard, once found, is more than eager to help him, and his only
condition, Ryan is to bring him a bunch of butterflies, a task Ryan
masters with aplomb. So things seem to be looking up - but for one thing:
The wizard is actually, unbeknownst to Ryan, Liam the spider, killer of
his parents, and he hasn't mended his ways since ... Now of course,
this is a film for the whole family with a focus on the kiddie crowd, so
one simply can't expecta deeply philosophical piece, a bold statement
pushing the artistic envelope, or a socio-political manifesto. But that
doesn't mean that for what it is, the film can't be entertaining still -
and The Secret oif Butterflies certainly is just that,
there's plenty of action in here, a few creepy bits to give the little
ones some scares you'd expect from any good fairy tale, bits of humour and
a likeable underlying message about self confidence and self acceptance -
so no, this film is by no means the re-invention of the wheel, but for
what it is it's pretty good, really.
