Returning from Afghabnistan, army doctor Watson (Howard Marion Crawford) looks
for accomodations in London, & for that reason hooks up with a certain
Sherlock Holmes (Ronald Howard), by then still a complete stranger to him, who
seems to have weird habits, macabre interests & a faible for the sinister
as well as for logical deduction. Still, Watson is impressed enough by this man
to move in with him at Baker Street & together they soon get involved into
a marder mystery: Peter Cunningham was stabbed to death, & his brother Rob
(Meg.Lemonnier) found his wife Joan (Ursula Howells) crouching over the dead
man knife in hand.
For police Instector Lestrade (Archie Duncan) it is a clearcut case of a
wife murdering her husband for the heritage, but Holmes has his doubts, so he
& Watson return to the Cunningham estate the same night to collect some
more evidence - & they make an interesting discovery: For the last few
weeks, the deceased did pay 1.000 Pounds weekly to a recipient unknown -
unknown until Rob confronts them, gun in hand, who has been blackmailing his
brother until his marriage put an end to that. & since now Holmes has found
out the truth, Rob will kill him & Watson to keep his secret - but Watson's
quick thinking & willingness to use his fist puts an end to Rob's evil
plans. When finally Lestrade arrives at the scene of the crime, the case is
solved.
The first of Sheldon Reynolds' 39-part series does tell a rather second-rate
murder mystery, but is interesting inasmuch as it does show the first encounter
of Holmes & Watson - an event often neglected in other Sherlock
Holmes-adaptations - & tells it from the point of view of #Watson, who only
slowly grows onto the weird detective, meaning this episode shows actual
character development - a rare treat in a 50's tv-series. However, at the end
of this show, the key personnel is properly introduced & the roles
they would have during the remainder of the series are firnmly established:
Holmes as the eccentric & detached detective who is always right, Lestrade
as the policeman who always jumps to (wrong) conclusions) & Watson as the
often overly emotional (& thus very human) sidekick who explains everything
to the audience.
