A wasteland littered with the remains of humankind, from broken down cars
to shipwrecks to discarded consumer goods: A father (voiced by Alfonso
Borbolla) is so obsessed with his dream to build a gigantic lighthouse
from literally scrap that he ignores everything else around him, very
specifically the well-being of his kids Lucia (Maria Penella Gómez) and
little Mati (Jaden Juárez) often leaving them on their own for days except
for when he needs them for assisting him on scavenger tours. And even on
these he treats them more as slaves than children, making sure these tours
are as joyless as possible. So of course he doesn't notice their silent
rebellion and ultimately running away - pretty much at the hour of his
silent (perceived) triumph, which he only then realized he has nobody to
share with ... Now I'm perfectly aware that above synopsis fails to
give you an accurate impression of Shimmer, a film that
relies as much on its story as it does on its imagery, imagery that finds
poetic beauty in dilapitated wastelands, damaged consumer goods and
steampunk-like creations, that mixes a deeply human story with sjrrealism,
and what's most important, the visuals really support the story rather
than overwhelm it And the storydoesn't relegate the pictures to
second fiddle either, staying inentiionally bare bones, denyiing us a
backstory or long-winded explanations that are really not needed for the
story's core and would distract from its impact. So in all, this is a
pretty breath-taking piece of CG-animation.
