To retrieve some energy-rich rock, a core team from Moonbase Alpha -
Captain Koenig (Martin Landau), Doctor Helena Russell (Barbara Bain),
shapeshifter Maya (Catherine Schell), not-exactly-sure-what-he-does Tony
(Tony Anhold), pilot Alan (Nick Tate), and Texan miner Dave (Patrick
Mower, whose only appearance on the show this was) - land on a barren
planet ... where they are soon enough attracted to a glistering rock, a
piece of which they bring back aboard their shuttle where it - kills Tony
actually, but doesn't actually kill him only make him ... well, un-alive I
guess. Zombiefied Tony later gets up to retrieve more of the rock, then
the rock locks everybody but Tony and Helena out of the shuttle and tries
to leave the planet - but can't because it just won't leave his rocky rest
behind. Somehow, the others make Tony alive again when he, in his
zombified state, wants to get another piece of the rock, but then the rock
possesses Dave. It all ends happily for the Alphans though, and when
they realize that the rock didn't attack them because it was evil but
because it needed water, they even let it rain (!) ... One of
the less special episodes of Space 1999, basically because it's based on a
very silly premise, is sloppily scripted, features a one-off character
(Dave) who's not only annoying but seems to be totally out of place with
the series' continuity, and the finale is just ... well, underwhelming.
Only a short miniature effects sequence of the shuttle taking off and
landing again shows the actual strengths of the series, but that's not
nearly enough to make the rest even remotely worthwhile ...
