The starship Enterprise is in hot pursuit of a battleship of an alien
race known as the Gorn that has just annihilated a Federation outpost,
when both the Enterprise and the Gorn ship, while crossing the solar
system of the Metrons, are brought to a standstill, and Captain Kirk
(William Shatner) of the Enterprise and the Captain of the Gorn ship, a
reptile-like creature, are beamed down to a barren planet and are forced
to fight it out between them one on one, with the loseer's ship to be
destroyed, by the Metrons, who won't let their solar system be turned into
a battleground.
For the longest time, it seems the Gorn Captain is winning, him being
much stronger and thicker skinned (literally), thus Kirk's punches seem to
have little effect, and soon enough all that's left for Kirk to do is
running from his opponent ...until he finds sulphur, potassium nitrate and
coal, the components of gunpowder, and before long, he has built himself a
firearm which he uses to knock out the Gorn ... but even though he has any
opportunity, he refuses to kill his opponent because by now, doubts have
arisen that the Federation outpost wasn't really on Gorn territory and the
Gorn had every right to attack it.
The Metrons are impressed by Kirk's refusal to kill his enemy and let
both ships go free - on Kirk's express request.
So ok, there might be some interesting ideas in this episode, but by
and large it is based on action - which is a pity, because the fight
scenes are probably the worst seen in any episode of the series, and the
dragon-like Gorn, though looking (moderately) impressive immediately,
looks more and more silly the longer the episode goes on. And the ending
is a little bit too cheesy too to impress.
Not really worth your while.
