It should have been a holiday on the space station Yorktown for the
Enterprise crew, but then an alien, Kalara (Lydia Wilson) is rescued and
asks for someone to accompany her back to the neighbouring nebula where
she has lost her crew. Of course, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) of the
Enterprise is quick to offer his assistance - and once in the nebula, the
Enterprise is attacked and wrecked by bee-swarm attack spaceships led by
one alien baddie called Krall (Idris Elba) - as it turns out, the
Enterprise has some ancient thingamabob aboard that Krall needs to build
the perfect weapon. He doesn't find it though, and all the Enterprise
regulars - Kirk, Spck (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban), Scotty (Simon
Pegg), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Sulu (John Cho) and Chekov (Andon Yelchin) -
find themselves stranded on a conveniently earthlike planet, either having
escaped in their escape pods or captured by Krall's gang of aliens. The
Enterprise though is a wreck, but Scotty just happens to meet alien Jaylah
(Sofia Boutella), who has made her home in a spaceship that happens to be
the long-lost USS Franklin, a ship Scotty has worked on. So basically,
Kirk and company first free those of their companions captured by Krall,
then make a race for it as Krall and his alien swarm already attack space
station Yorktown - and only Kirk's little gang knows how to ward them off
... Star Trek: Beyond is above all else beautiful
spectacle. Basically, its story only makes limited sense and is more of a
ploy to hang its action sequences on - but these sequences at least are
beautifully executed and tense to boot. Plus, the injection of quite a bit
of humour doesn't hurt either, and the production designs are nothing
short of breathtaking. And while Chris Pine and crew ae of course no
William Shatner and crew, they're uiformly up to their task. Basically,
great popcorn cinema, and while not a film you'll remember for all that
long, it's much fun while it lasts.
