Seeing the universe as they knew it gone - meaning mostly destroyed by
the Klingons - the crew of the Discovery, together with Admiral Cornwell
(Jayne Brook) and Sarek (James Frain) make plans for a counterstrike, and
they figure they can only succeed if they attack the Klingons' home planet
- but since it's heavily guarded, they decide to use their spore drive to
jump inside the planet and destroy it from there. There's one problem, now
that their spore navigator Stamets (Anthony Rapp) is operational again,
they've run out of spores - so they quickly terraform some moon or other
to fill up their tanks again. In the meantime, Emperor Georgiou from the
evil universe plots to take command of the Discovery - and succeeds, for
the sole reason that in the evil universe, she has beaten the Klingons,
and thus is the best bet to do so in this universe as well. In a
subplot, Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) has to come to terms that the very
Ash who was once her lover was actually a Klingon spy who went so far as
trying to kill her, and the now separated Ash might or might not have some
Klingon traits inside him but is a different person - or not or something
... Frankly, an episode with a good premise ... that veers off
into too many directions all at once while lacking a tight enough story to
really convince - which pretty much has been the problem with the series
for several episodes now, it loses itself in too many subplots, and not
all of them interesting ones, to remain narratively tense. Sure, the
episode has its moments, but mostly feels just like a set-up for the next
episode, the season finale ...
