Piper's (Gianna Lutz) brother Jason (Dave Hurt)
and his girlfriend Selena (Emree Franklin) have gone missing in the woods
that have become notorious for swallowing up people without a trace, and
in fourteen days the police haven't come up with even a clue leading to
them - also because they're afraid themselves of this very stretch of land
and wouldn't go near it even in the line of duty. So Piper, her boyfriend
Cody (Carter Burch), her best friend Mallory (Chynna Walker) and Mallory's
boyfriend Devin (Swayde McCoy) decide to go to the woods themselves
looking for Jason. But the group is off to a bad start already as the two
male members of the group constantly butt heads. And yes, Devin is a
cynical stoner, but Cody's hardly any better, a wannabe manly man who
thinks he has all the answers for being an ex-marine while totally
ignoring that he doesn't even understand the questions. So there's
constant infighting between the two, which doesn't help any and at times
gets violent - but ultimately, the first night, Devin is killed by
something, who knows what, but it certainly wasn't Cody. And that
something certainly harkens back to the local legend of a witch (Amanda
Evans) having been executed in this neck of the woods. After this shock,
our heroes decide to ditch their rescue efforts and make it out of the
woods to their car, but the markings they have left to find their way back
now only lead them in circles, as do the stars, and a river they've swam
in only yesterday that should lead them to civilisation has suddenly
disappeared. So they're pretty much trapped in the forest, drained of
their lifeforce as their supplies run low, and after them there's some
thing that only waits to strike them down, whenever it so pleases ...
Now The Texas Witch is certainly not the film that has
re-invented survival horror, and I would go so far to say its plot isn't
utterly original - but that said, the film's really good at what it does,
telling a suspense story that's actually also compelling, with all the
violence and jump scares in all the right places, with a beliuevable group
of central characters embodied by a relatable ensemble cast, led by a
genre savvy direction. So it might not be the re-invention of the wheel,
but it's a really fun horror ride.
