Nicky (Danny Provenzano) has been groomed to be a mobster since a very
early age, what with his uncle being Danny Santini (Frank Vincent), and he
has proven time and again he's up for the task. That said, by the early
2000s the world was gradually going online and the mob business model of
old, with all its traditions and so-called codes of honour, was going out
of style - and of course, Nicky couldn't fail but notice that.
Fortunately, one of his friends from college, Austin (Louis Vanaria) is a
computer genius with just enough criminal energy to not look away when it
comes to stealing a small fortune with minimum risk. So when gets the
chance to buy a super-chip that will enable him to siphon small amounts of
saving accounts without anybody noticing - something that will amount to
about 2 billion Dollar in total -, he goes to his mobster friend Nicky for
funding, Nicky to his uncle Danny, and Danny to the big capos, who think
these kids are crazy with their talk about computers - but are not immune
to the sound of $2 billion. And Austin was right of course, the crime as
such is ultra-low risk. But then other families find out about Nicky and
Austin's free money machine and want their hands on it as well - and
before you know it, what was supposed to be a clean and state of the art
crime becomes a very old-fashioned and bloody mob war ... Now by the
early 2000s, gangster cinema has been on one side infested by Quentin
Tarantino and Guy Ritchie clones who were desperate to put a post-modern
spin on things, on the other it had become revisionist and over-thinking.
And sure, all of these directions produced some pretty awesome films, but
yet This Thing of Ours feels like a breath of fresh air
between all of this, for simply not following one fad or the other but
sticking to the spirit of the Godfather movies
and Martin Scorsese's gangster epics - which is of course also mirrored in
the casting. And even if the budget did not allow for excesses of
afore-mentioned movies, this is still carried by a storyline that's both
epic and tight at the same time. And add to this a direction that's
light-footed and hard-hitting at the same time, and a cast heavy on
character actors that not only act but also look their parts, and you end
up with pretty awesome genre cinema.
