Toxic Avenger

For this year's San Diego ComiCon, Troma
has announced an utter sensation: The first convention appearance of Mark
Torgl aka Marvin the Mop Boy from the cult classic The
Toxic Avenger. Thing is, Torgl, who has vanished from the face of
the world shortly after the release of that movie, is less than sure about
this, which is why he brings along documentarian Joe Nardelli to film
everything - the reason for this being, the rumours that he actually drank
toxic waste on the Toxic
Avenger set are actually true, and now he ... needs more because
his stash is just about used up, and he thinks that Lloyd Kaufman himself
might help him, or maybe mysterious Mecca (Christy Johnson). Problem is,
baddie Jonny Fairplay (Jon Dalton) has found out Torgl's secret, and thus
kills Mecca for her stash and then ... he's eventually stopped by
wrestlers Mel Novak and Jake "the Snake" Roberts. But Torgl in
the meantime is kidnapped by two sisters who - not sure what they want,
but it has something to do with Torgl's toxic potion. And while all the
world is shocked by Torgl's sudden disappearance, his most loyal fans form
the Tutu Brigade to eventually come to his rescue. Thing is, nobody knows
what the potion actually does, and if it's actually a good or a bad thing
... To make a sort of meta-film about The
Toxic Avenger is a slightly original idea - sure, meta-films of
this ilk have been done before, but due to its status as bad taste cult
classic, The Toxic Avenger does
offer a rather unique foundation. The resulting film though doesn't really
live up to the concept's promise, its story seems to have been put
together rather hastily to make full use of the convention at hand (and
the many stars that come with it), much of the plot has a "make it up
as we go along"-quality to it which means the movie doesn't make
perfect sense and on top of this lacks any real structure, and many scenes
seem to be improvised on the spot and done in as few takes as possible,
which means the camera doesn't always follow the action properly, and
often the dialogues lack proper punchlines or they aren't delivered in the
best possible way. In all a bit of a mess - which admittedly does feature
a few really good jokes and which will find a home in the hearts of Toxic
Avenger-fans no doubt ... but overall it's just not a very good
movie.
