John (Tod Andrews) meets Lila (Eve Brent), whose car has broken down,
and he offers her a lift. Soon the two of them end up in a bar, but when
the barman (Jack Lomas) mentions the name Morgan Debs, Lila urges John to
make a hasty getaway and promises to meet him later that night somewhere
in the woods ... but their later meeting is spoiled by the arrival of
Morgan Debs (Boris Karloff), and while John gets in a heated discussion
with Debs, whom he thinks to be some over-possessive sugar daddy, Lila
disappears, and Debs asks John to not go after her - which is of course
exactly what John is doing, but no trace can be found of her, until he
beats the address of Lila's mother out of the barman. But at the place of
Lila's mother (Claudia Bryar), John has to learn - from Debs, no less, who
turns out to be Lila's uncle - that Lila is dead, and has been so for
three years. In the end, John finds Lila's carwreck at exactly the spot
Debs told him it would be, and it turns out to be the same car Lila has
broken down with just a few hours earlier. A mystery/ghost
story that is a bit too predictable to sustain suspense throughout and
that has one major inherent flaw: For some reason, nobody in the whole
episode seems to be too much surprised that Lila's spirit still wanders
around freely and even visits a cocktail bar, even though most characters
know she's already dead.
