Vic (Amanda Winston) is a sound effects and foley artist, mostly on horror
movies, and she's actually rather good at it, as she not only takes bride
in her work,
she also gels well with the genre thanks to her own dark imagination. But
as good as she is, she sees herself as no equal to her idol, the recently
deceased Thomas Raven. So when she and her sound engineer Coop (Jason
Mackniskas) are approached by filmmaker KMilo Kemp (Bill D. Russell) to
finish his film which Raven has started soundwork on, they're both
thrilled, especially when Vic's given Raven's (literal) box of tricks
which Kemp insists for her to use. That said, once she starts working on
the film, she's disappointed by its plot (or lack thereof) and calls it
little more than a piece of torture porn. But then again, a job's a job,
and she'd follow Raven's footsteps anywhere. Thing is, the deeper she gets
into doing sound and foley for the film, the more troubling things become,
be it nightmares about the film's content, then hallucinations and
ultimately the film seems to somehow sneak into the real world ...
Now this is certainly not your typical horror film, even though the
premise, stripped to the bone - a mysterious stranger hiring somebody for
something that makes them unwittingly open the door to hell - seems to be
genre staple. However, instead of telling the story in a straightforward
way, the film goes meta and/or experimental ever so often, mixes planes of
reality, and besides all this also sings its own lovesong to sound design
in general. And at least if you have an open mind, the result is truly
fascinating, basically an audiovisual puzzle that plays with one's mind
while never missing a beat when it comes to creeping one out, ultimately
resulting in a truly triplike genre experience.
