Basically, this is not so much a purely narrative movie, and more of a
parody of the experience to watch a mini-series on a local public access
channel, with cheap adverts and all, so forgive if this doesn't make too
much sense: It all starts with Uncle Bobbo's (Vincent Stalba) kiddie TV
show where young Purity (Stella Creel) explains how rubber is essentially
made out of the blood of dinosaurs, a show that ends on a very
inappropriate show - this segment was actually first released as the
standalone short The Blood of
the Dinosaurs. Then it's off to the main storylines, one of them
being artist Marge (Kali Russell) daydreaming about being Captain Corn
crossing the galaxies to find the center of the universe in a Star
Trek like adventure, her crossing paths with her nemesis Dr.
Universe (Jeff Pearson) ever so often. But there's also the story about
Marge the mechanic (Kali Russell again) reading a
choose-your-own-adventure book about grown up Purity (Kali Russell yet
again) going on a search for the secret of the universe, her efforts
somewhat thwarted by vampiric Mr. Universe (Jeff Pearson again). But then
sometimes, the film also has random making-of scenes of itself thrown in,
just for good measure ... ... and if you think my synopsis
sounds like a bit of a garbled mess right now, I won't for one minute
argue with you - because that's the exact point of the movie, it was never
supposed to be a straightforward narrative but basically conceptionalized
as an experimental comedy - and the outcome is decidedly mad, for one
thanks to the director who dares to take risks and who manages to make the
often intentionally cheap aesthetics work for the movie instead of against
it, and also thanks to the cast who are clearly in on the joke but play it
mostly straight, creating utter hilarity in the process. Ultimately this
is a very unusual experience, but great entertainment all the same.
