Trumpet-like sounds can ge heard from the sky in remote locations all
over the world, and as there is absolutely no explanation for that
phenomenon, all kinds of wild conspiracy theories soon pop up - wild
enough for student and wannabe journalist Cassie (Laura Ellen Wilson) to
persuade her best friend Margot (Laura Saxon) to check out one location in
Hungary where these "skyquakes" have been reported - after all,
the worst thing that could happen is the two find nothing but have a lot
of fun. However, once at the location, the girls don't just experience a
skyquake first hand, they also find out much more than they bargained for
- or can handle, really ... Too many found footage films
nowadays consist of the actors clumsily try to improvise dialogue while
using shaky camerawork to fake excitement and suspense. Project
Skyquake in contrast has much more thought put into it, starting with
the fact that the two protagonists just feel real, a handful of guest
stars (Tom Sizemore, Robert LaSardo, Simon Bamford), if remotely filmed,
are cleverly integrated into the plot, the effects-work is pretty amazing,
and much emphasis is put on creating tension and atmosphere and just
keeping things as cinematic as possible within found footage confines. And
the result is a rather tense science fiction thriller that sure enough
deserves a watch.
