Your upcoming movie Lion
- in a few words, what is it about,
and what can you tell us about your character in it?
I’d
like to use just one word: Revenge! My character is
a contradictory figure... a strong and submissive woman at the same time. What
did you draw upon to bring Amanda to life? First thing, I had to get into the story… so I closed my eyes and I
started to live every situation. In this way the character takes shape.
Since childhood I thought I would be capable of doing a horror film,
because it is a genre that gives me very strong feelings. How did you get involved
with the movie in the first place, and to what extent could you identify
with the film's horror theme? As I said
before, I think I'm doing well because it’s easy for me to get into the
story. I also have to admit that I usually don’t watch scary movies
because if they are good (as those of Davide Melini [Davide
Melini interview - click here]), I take them
seriously and I don’t sleep in the night… and if they're bad, they
just bore me. I know immediately if a project is serious and
interesting, and Lion
is absolutely one of these!
What can you tell us about
your director Davide Melini [Davide
Melini interview - click here], and what was your collaboration
like? For
me it has been a godsend… it’s been an honor to be chosen for the role
of Amanda! Working with Davide is very easy, because he tells you exactly
what he wants and it’s almost impossible to make mistakes. I’m very
proud to jave worked with him and with the entire cast and crew. Lion
has been a real gift for me. What can you tell us about the shoot as such, and
the on-set atmosphere? I
only remember one thing: When I was under the bed, dressed with only a
nightgown, at three o'clock in the morning… and it was very cold - hahahaha, I’m
joking of course. I have to say that everything has been
great and quick. Thanks to the great professionalism of the crew, we repeated
the shots only a few times and I think we did a very good job! Any future projects you'd like to
share? Actually I'm working on a theater
project, entitled Lluvia Fina, with Nacho Albert and Paco
Bernal. I’m also working with the association Con los pies en la
tierra, and soon we are going to shoot a short film written by
myself. What got you into acting in the first place, and
did you receive any formal training on the subject? I've
loved my job since I was just a kid. Every day was good to make up stories
and create different characters (in my father’s office, at school, at my grandmother's house).
In this job you never stop to learn and that's
the reason why I studied at the Esad Film Drama School (in Malaga)
and I've done many film courses. I remember that one day a teacher told me
that theater is like a drug, and I completely agree. If you can, try to
leave this world, but if you really feel it in your bones, you will always
return. You can’t escape, hahahaha.
What
can you tell us about your filmwork prior to Lion? I
worked on several short films, some TV series and in advertising. I’ve
also had a small role in the film Prime Time, directed by Luis
Calvo. As
far as I know, you're actually better known for your theatre work - so
what can you tell us about Tania Mercader, the stage actress? And how does
performing on stage compare to acting in front of a camera? In
the beginning, I refused any film offer because my true love was the
theater - it’s a very strong love, full of wonderful memories… I
remember that I acted while I was six months pregnant... my son was on the
theatre stage even before he was born, hahaha. After quite some time I expanded
my experiences and I’ve started to work in the film industry. These
worlds are completely different from one another, but I love them both. How
would you describe yourself as an actress, and some of your techniques to
bring your characters to life? I think my
strength is my versatility: I'm an actress who can adapt herself well to
any situation. But the techniques are a secret, hahaha.
Actresses (and indeed
actors) who inspire you? Bette
Davis, Sofia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Daniel Day-Lewis, Najwa Nimri,
Antonio de la Torre, Adriana Ozores, Candela Peña and many, many more. Your favourite movies? My
Life to Live directed by Jean-Luc Godard, 8 e
Mezzo by Federico Fellini,
Dogville by Lars Von Trier, Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson, Secrets
& Lies by Mike Leigh, Dark Blue Almost Black by Daniel
Sánchez,
Stones by Ramón Salazar, and of course Lion by Davide Melini. ...
and of course, films you really deplore?
I hate the disaster movies … I really don’t like to see the end of the
world, etc… Your website,
Facebook, whatever else?
Yes, people can visit my official website
(www.taniamercader.com)
and they can also find me on Facebook
(https://www.facebook.com/Tania-Mercader-29045148113).
Anything else you're dying to
mention and I have merely forgotten to ask?
May
I ask the gouvernment of my country to lower taxes and help the film
industry? Hahahaha, naybe something a little easier is better… so I ask to
Davide Melini to think of me again for his future projects. And thanks
a lot to you, Michael, for this great interview! Thanks for
the interview!
