When Man Bill, head of Chun Yuen delivery services, finds out his
brother Man Pao, also working for the company, is using the delivery
services for some drug smugling on the side, he initially tries to
persuade him to give himself up to the police, but for the sake of
Man Pao's family decides to forgive him instead. For Man Pao & his
business associate Yu though it soon becomes clear there is another way
out of the situation: to kill Bill (sorry). But Man Bill, master of the
Monkeyish Fist, is a fierce fighter, & it takes massive manpower to
beat him. But while Man Pao & Yu think they finally got rid of him,
he is saved by Mandy, who nurses him back to health & becomes his
martial arts student. One year later 2 bumbling teenagers - Granduncle,
a talented fighter, & Ka Yip, perfect in drawing Kung Fu stances -
look for the ultimate master of the Monkeyish fist (which is of course
Man Bill) & find Man Bill through Mandy. But the man is reluctant at
first & wants to lead a quiet life. It is only when policeman Hung,
too, finds Man Bill, & spills the beans to Man Pao & Yu -
unaware that they were the ones who wanted to vget rid of him in the
first place - that the foundations of this quiet life are shaken &
the 2 boys prove a great help when fighting the Chun Yuen delivery
services - as does officer Hung who even loses his life when he &
Man Bill are saving Mandy who was kidnapped by the villains. In the end
though, Granduncle & Ka Yip go to Chun Yuen delivery services on
their own, to take revenge, but are rejoined by both Mandy & Man
Bill eventually, who finally beat all the bad guys - monkeyfiststyle. Every
movie that claims heavy drinking is a good basis for crimefighting
(& there are a few, & with Drunken Master II director Lau
Kar Leung, did at least one more of them) deserves at least some
respect. Also, the action is first class & the 1930's backdrop
is rather stylish. What pretty much ruins the movie though is the overly
clichéd story of the 2 bumbling kids who want to learn Kung Fu &
for that reason are dragged into all sorts of troubles, which is here
told in a completely unoriginal way, only diverting much attention from
the otherwise rather solid gangster-smuggler-plot.
