While last episode
explored the rise of the Wu-Tang Clan, this one discusses the impact the
band's international success had on the Staten Island rap scene, and how
it really put Staten Island on the hip hop map. And it was not just that
all nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan got record deals with various record
labels, also other hip hop artists and crews were suddenly met with
interest from the music industry while the burrough previously had been a
blind spot on the map. And various members of Wu-Tang actually mentored
many a future talent or produced their music or guested on their records,
lifting the local hip hop scene to new heights ... Now I will
say this, as a casual hip hop fan, some of this documentary eludes me as
it assumes quite a bit of prior knowledge, and unfortunately it also often
fails to present the audience with musical samples of the artists
portrayed. But even so, it's a fascinating portrayal of a lesser known
aspect of music history, lesser known area on the musical map, and the
energy of those interviewed suggests a very brimming scene indeed - all
making up for a pretty inspiring documentary.
