The American Civil War: A trio of no-gooders - sinister businessman
Nicholas Tower (John Miljan), Senator Tucker (Wallis Clark) and local
badman Morrell (Hal Taliaferro) want to cut California off the rest of the
country to ultimately take it over, and they want to do so by attacking
gold shipments meant for the North ... but the gold shipment is guarded
Wild Bill Hickok (Roy Rogers), whom the Union has hired despite him being
engaged to a Southern Belle (Jacqueline Wells), and Hickok knows pretty
much every trick in the book ... Unfortunately the baddies know a few
tricks of their own, with respected businessman Tower a perfect
mole with Hickok's outfit - and before you know it, our trio of villains
have their hands on the gold, and even have Hickok arrested for stealing
it ... and it seems as if everything speaks against Hickok.
Then though the war is suddenly over, and the baddies want to make off
to California with their gold - and Hickok is freed by his trusted friends
Gabby (Gabby Hayes) and Calamity Jane (Sally Payne), and of course, in the
end, they can not only retrieve the gold and bring the criminals to
justice, Hickok can also finally take some time out to marry his
sweetheart ...
Singing cowboy Roy Rogers playing legendary Westerner Wild Bill
Hickok might be a bit of a stretch, especially when you see Wild Bill
serenading his sweetheart, perfectly shaved, groomed and dressed. But that
aside, Young Bill Hickok is not a bad Western, it's full of action,
shoot-outs and massive horse-riding. Of course, at the same time the film
is nothing special, and there are much better, much more original and much
more interesting B-Westerns out there, but still the film makes for an
entertaining 55 minutes and is one of Roy's better films.
