Before he found sitcom success with Everybody Loves Raymond,
Ray Romano was a successful standup comedian, usually touring the country
with his best friend, comedy partner and warm-up act Tom Caltabiano, who
later became a writer on his show. After the show's fifth season (and at
the height of its popularity) though, Ray and Tom decided to hit the stage
again and had a limited 7 city-tour, just for old time's sake. Due to Ray's fear
of flying though, they made the whole trip by car. Tom insisted to have
the whole trip filmed, but Ray rejected the idea to have a camera crew
with him all the time - so they picked Roger Lay jr, a young film student
and intern on the show, to capture the trip fly-on-the-wall-style. The
film captures everything from Ray and Tom's performances via long
cardrives that strain both their nerves to boring hours in faceless hotel
rooms, and reveals the two men's genuine sense of humour as well as their
neurosises, their genuine friendship as well as the strain a trip of this
kind puts on everybody - but most of all, this film is really funny,
actually.
