Glitch is bound to be the next big thing in social media, the
first to let routinely lets users use AI to write witty posts and
comments, and CEO Ev (Coley Bryant) and head programmer Sean (Jack
Murillo) have pretty much put their heart and soul to make it work. Thing
is, Glitch hasn't launched yet, and the company's already a few
millions in debt without having any success to show for it. And then Ev
receives the offer of a lifetime: Jack (James Fahselt), CEO of Trender,
the biggest social media company on the planet, wants to buy Glitch - and
sure, it's to eliminate potential competition before it even hits the
market (as once online, anti-trust laws would prevent mergers), but then
again, Jack does offer a cool billion Dollars, which would not only be
more than enough to pay for all their debts, but also make Ev, Sean and
their silent partner Noah (Lee Shorten) rich enough to never have to work
again for a day in their lives. Ev is naturally ecstatic about this, also
of course taken in by Jack's charm, but also by the simple fact that a
billion's a billion. Sean on the other hand has major doubts, also because
he really wanted to make Glitch work on their own. And also, if
somebody offers one a billion, sight unseen, isn't it that it might
actually be a lot more. So while Ev has already started negotiations, Sean
starts to dig - and what he comes up with he doesn't like, and it even
gradually sways Ev's opinion. But maybe at that point, they're in much too
deep to escape Jack and Trender's web ... Ok, a thriller
set in the world of high economics isn't exactly a guarantee for success,
and if you're further handicapped by having your protagonists talking
mostly over phone and Facetime (owed presumably to Covid restricions,
though I have no confirmation of this) doesn't necessarily make things any
easier to create tension and suspense ... and that all said, The
Company Called Glitch That Nobody and Everybody Wanted works like a
clockwork when it comes to keeping the viewers at the edge of their seats
at all points, thanks not only to a great script but also to a non-linear
structure that takes its dear time to reveal itself to the audience
logically but that keeps things alive through clever editing, and a fast
paced directorial effort and a very solid cast also help making this into
a very entertaining piece of genre cinema.
