Kammie's (Lee Hae-eun) parents run a run-down hotel that's actually
only making some money because they also have a prostitute in their
employ, Jane (Lee Ji-eun), a good-natured, well-meaning girl in Kammie's
age whom Kammie despises for what she does - even though the whole family
lives from Jane's work - and whom she rejects, despite Jane's attempts to
make friends. (Kammie's dad and her young brother Young on the other hand
do like Jane, and both at one point have sex with her.)
Another reason why Kammie despises Jane is that she herself is frigid,
, and even her boyfriend Chapman, frustrated over not getting any, has
visited Jane once (without Jane knowing that Chapman was Kammie's
boyfriend, plus in the end nothng happened anyways.
Before long, Kammie gets so supset about the situation that she reports
everything to the police in an anonymous phonecall and almost destroys her
family's business.
Soon not only Kammie but the whole family reacts increasingly hostile
towards Jane, and at one point Jane can't handle it anymore that noone
appreciates her even though it's only her work that keeps the whole family
afloat that she decides to leave ... and now it's Kammie who holds her
back, and for the first time starts seeing her as a human being, and
ultimately she saves Jane from her abusive boyfirend/wannabe-pimp.
... and in the end, she serves one of Jane's clients to give Jane a
rest.
The story of this film might sound far-fetched, unreal and totally
exploitative - yet the film works like a charm. Basically it's a quiet
melodrama with sudden outbursts of sex and violence which are totally
integrated into the story though, and of course it takes a talented
director like Kim Ki-duk to bring the rather unbelievable situation to
life, by not judging or exaggerating it but by portraying it in a series
of unspectacular yet impressive sequences.
A very cool, very different film.
