Aaron (Mark Elias) is a bit of a genius, and the fact that he's a top programmer for NASA only proves that - but he's got next to no people skills, alienating pretty much everyone around him. And then his mother dies, and with her gone he has lost his only social contact. So he decides online dating - but fails miserably, even though he himself has created the dating app. So he decides to create himself a woman, Emma (Meeghan Holaway), as he's well-versed in robotics as well as programming. He's just not very good in making Emma act human as he has little experience with actually acting human, so he takes inspiration from Ben (Paul Dooley), a senior citizen he has inherited taking care of from his mother, and after many a false start the two actually become friends. Thing is, being based on Ben Emma becomes "human" a bit too quickly, develops a mind of her own and a range of feelings wider than Aaron is even able to comprehend. And then Emma finds out that she's a robot and Aaron has created her as a companion for himself - and when she finds out, things quickly spin out of control ...

Basically this is a romantic comedy with a science fiction theme to it, not at all unlike 80s fan favourite Weird Science (even though the concept has of course been around for much longer), but while the film stays light-footed throughout, it does have some depth to it, digging into philosophy and asking "what makes a human human?" - and what makes the film is that it doesn't come up with simple answers, instead leaves room for interpretation. And subtly directed and ably acted, this makes for a pretty entertaining watch, actually.
