For years now, the Earth Federation has tried to get their hands on
pirate Pantera (Michael DeLano) who has routinely looted earth freighters,
but he has proven to be evasive over the years - but now it's found out
that his girlfriend Jen (Jamie Lee Curtis) has been convicted for murder
and is an inmate in a high security prison - on a planet that's not part
of the Federation and has no extradition treaty with the Federation. So
Buck Rogers (Gil Gerard) is smuggled into the prison where he quickly
breaks her free, and they even manage to evade a warden robot (Walter
Hunter) gone berzerk, so everything's good ... only it isn't as Warwick
(Robert Cornthwaite), a diplomat and one of the closest friends of the
Federation's chief of defense, Dr. Huer (Tim O'Connor) is secretly a spy
for Pantera, and Pantera wants to intercept Buck and the girl to kill
them, as he has long found a new girlfriend (Tara Buckman). Of course
there's much to and fro, also because Jen is less than sure she wants to
go with Buck and at one time actually tries to hitch a ride with Pantera,
and also Wilma Deering (Erin Gray), Buck's back-up, is thrown into the
mix, but ultimately (and ironically) the warden robot gone berzerk saves
the day ... One of the livelier and more fun episodes of Buck
Rogers in the 25th Century, as it really throws all sorts of pulp
mainstays at our heroes, including insane robots, tentacles, desert
monsters and the like, keeps things at a steady pace to keep the audience
from overthinking the plot, and has a campy feel to it without taking
itself too seriously or going too camp. That said, don't expect a sci-fi
classic of any sort, just good nostalgia-tinted entertainment.
