Arlette (Hélène Cardona) was a fashion designer on the rise - until a
fashion show went horribly wrong, pretty much catapulting her out of the
fashion world. Since she has never done anything but designing, she finds
it difficult to get ahead in the corporate world and thus is soon reduced
to live in her van with her nine year old daughter Caralique (Kali
Funston). And yet, she has always supported her daughter's creativity and
imagination, while Caralique, mimmicking her mother, has even in her early
days picked up the basics of fashion design - so much so that her drawing
of a spacesuit that shows some vision ultimately gets her mother a job at Interstellar. Flash
forward a few years, and Caralique's now in senior high (and played by
Isabella Blake-Thomas) - and she's still obsessed with fashion design, so
much so that she neglects schoolwork for it and is in pretty much constant
confrontation with conservative school principal Wagner (Julia Parker),
who's trying to crush her dreams. But help might come from unexpected
corners ... Caralique is nothing if not inspirational, a
bit of an underdog tale about individuality and creativity with a positive
message, set to colourful and often inventive imagery, caught by nicely
flowing camerawork. And a solid cast playing a colourful cast of
characters help make this a film that might be a tad to wholesome for
some, but overall a very positive cinematic experience.
