The stone age, a time when humans and dinosaurs co-existed (not in real
life of course, but in this movie they do): Meet a tribe that regularly
sacrifices someone to the local tyrannosaurus rex, and meet this tribe's
high priest, a very cruel man who rules his tribe according to the survival
of the fittest-principle. Then meet Mumma, a pretty young girl who's
bullied by everybody, and nobody wants to give her food, so in order to
survive she tries to steal from the high priest - who catches her and
immediately has her tied up for another tyrannosaurus rex sacrifice. But
one of the tribesmen shows pity, frees her and helps her get away, even if
that means he will become an outcast as well, facing a life on the run
with Mumma. Our heroes, always pursued by their tribe, soon learn about
the hardships of prehistoric life, when they fight pterodactyls and
cannibalistic Neanderthal men, and eventually, our young hero gets knocked
out during a fight while Mumma is recaptured, dragged back to her village
and tortured by the high priest. Against all odds, our hero survives
though, he is saved by a more developed stone age man, who has invented
bow and arrow, and has found a way to domesticate the triceratops. Our
hero learns the art of archery from him and gets friendly with his family,
but then he loses his friend in a hunting accident, and his cave is raided
and his triceratops is raided by our hero's own tribe. So our hero
comes to the conclusion it's time to face his past, and he returns to his
tribe to challenge the high priest to a duel to the death, defeats and
kills the high priest thanks to his fancy new weapon (the bow and arrow)
unheard of in his tribe, then proves himself worthy to be the new leader
of his tribe by using his archery skills to kill the local tyrannosaurus
rex. Rather primitive and naive stone age drama that definitely
displays less than perfect special effects - basically just men in
unconvincing rubber suits -, especially considering it was probably made
to cash in on 1993's special effects extravaganza Jurassic Park. On
top of that, Dinosaurs vs Cavemen's plot is just a bit too
simplistic and clichéed to really create much interest for itself - but
all of this, coupled with a rather old-fashioned directorial effort, also
gives the film a certain primitive, slightly trashy charm, at least for
bad movie lovers like myself ...
