Old Rikard (Xhevat Quorraj) has only recently lost his wife for over 50
years and has been swindled out of his house by his own son, and is now
forced to live with his daughter Ema (Fatlume Bunjaku) and her husband
Lorenc (Agron Shala) in their rural home in the mountains, and while his
will to go on is gradually eroding, he also becomes more and more of a
burden to Ema and Lorenc as well, as not only are they in a financial fix,
they're also arguing over to whether or not have a baby. And Lorenc lack
of enthusiasm for this slowly drives Ema into the arms of their neighbour
(Kastriot Shehi). And this situation, paired with the unfamiliarity of his
surroundings alienates Rikard, too old for a fresh start, even more, so
much so that he thinks about moving on for good ... Relying
heavily on naturalism above everything else and taking a no-frills
approach to things, The Forgotten Mountain certainly harks back to
the days of neorealismo, while its topic seems to be almost
arthouse staple - and yet, this is a movie that can stand completely on
its own as it tells its story rather compellingly through its lack of
spectacle (and even a musical score till the very end) and its refusal to
drive any message home, instead delivers food for thought and lets the
audience see for themselves what they're ablot to take away from the
thing. And while the direction of the movie is definitely subtle, it
nevertheless manage to bring the beauty of its locations to the fore,
while the cast is solid enough to rather masterfully carry the story,
making this one a very rewarding watch.
