As long as the worldwide war was waging, Peri (Eliv Sevinc), the girl
with no mouth, and her father (Sermet Yesil) were living a very peaceful
life in a forgotten part of the country, but now that peace is looming and
"The Corporation" is taking over, children deformed by birth
like Peri are collected, and whatever the Corporation has in store for
them is likely very grim. Of all people, Kemal (Mehmet Yilmaz Ak), the
brother of Peri's father comes to collect her, and when her father won't
hand her over, the two men get into a fight and Kemal kills Peri's dad.
Peri makes a run for it, and crossing the river gives her temporal respite
since that's uncharted territory even for the Corporation - until she
steps into an animal trap that hoists her into the air and is saved only
eventually by "the Captain" (Denizhan Akbaba) ... who's actually
a kid like her, but born without eyes. He's the leader of "the
Pirates", that also include noseless Yusuf (Özgür Civelek) and
earless Badger (Kaan Alpdayi), kids who have banded together because of
their deformities, and have fled to the woods to live their lives on their
own terms. With them, in their pirate ship shaped camp, Peri spends some
of her happiest times - until Kemal and his men catch up with her and burn
down the pirate ship, but Peri and her new friends can escape, and they
make it through some caves to the next valley, a valley containing an
abandoned and decaying village, something none of the kids have ever seen
before, and basically, the village becomes their big playground, with the
only danger coming from a woman (Özay Fecht) they percieve a zombie in
their childlike innocence. But of course, it doesn't take Kemal and
company long to catch up again - and if it wasn't for the
"zombie" and her machine gun who chases Kemal away, the kids
would be done for. But Kemal has promised to return, with more men, to
finally get his job done ... In many ways, Girl With No
Mouth plays and feels like a post-apocalyptic fairy tale, and a very
charming one at that, as it has clearly identifiable good and bad guys, it
has a heart-warming message, it has (pseudo-)magical worlds, sweet
children, true friendship, the villain getting his just desserts, and a
bittersweet ending with protagonists giving their lives for the greater
good. That said, this is by no means a kids' movie as it has its violent
streaks, is rather gruesome and explicit at times, and is also disturbing
for various reasons. But for grown up children with a predilection for the
macabre, this is pretty much a feast, as it's well-crafted, visually
stunning, and basically just a joy to watch.
