A 15 foot tall Grizzly roams a national park, killing tourists &
rangers aplenty, & it's up to head ranger Kelly (Christopher George)
to get the beast. To do so, he ensures the help of wildlife expert Scott
(Richard Jaeckel), wo is considered a little crazy by everybody since he
sometimes lives in the wild for months on end. But of course Kelly's
& Scott's efforts are heavily sabotaged by the park's supervisor
(Joe Dorsey), who is more interested in making money than security in
his park. it isn't until the bear gets down to a residential area &
kills a mother & her child just outside their house that the
supervisor grants Kelly free reign over the hunt, so Kelly & Scott
go hunting accompanied by Vietnam veteran & helicopter pilot Don (Andrew
Prine), who has sworn never to kill again but changes his mind during
the proceedings (oh please !). Of course both Scott & Don have to
give their lives, & the bear even attacks the helicopter before
Kelly can blast him to pieces with a bazooka.
Joan McCall has a completely pointless role as Kelly's girlfriend.
A very blatant rip-off of the then very successful but very mediocre
shark-horror-movie Jaws, with only turning the sea into the woods
& the fish into a bear, but other than that using the very same
clichéd characters that Jaws also used instead of having some
original ones, & pretty much all the same overused plottwists as
well. Only, the fact that this time around it's a bear doesn't make the
movie any better (but not actually worse) than Jaws, since bears
- though extremely fierce creatures in reality - always remind one of
the clumsy but lovable circus animals - & that's not quite the stuff
nightmares are made of.
