Having saved the Happy Ghost's (Raymong Wong) shrine from burning to
the ground, dog Magic is granted one wish: to become a man (also Raymond
Wong) ... but only for 49 days. After having difficulties to adjust to
human life at first, Magic retrieves the stolen purse of his former owner,
Kathy (Kris Aquino), and as a thank you she gets him a job in a pet shop -
something he's cut out for -, and starts to date him ... mainly though
because she wants to teach her boyfriend Jack (Roger Kwok) she has just
broken up with but still loves a lesson. Magic however falls in love with
Kathy, so much so that the Happy Ghost sees it fit to intervene and make
them break up before the whole affair ends in a big mess. This might leave
Magic heartbroken, but it would have been much worse any other way. Finally,
the 49 days are over, and when it's only hours until Magic will turn back
into a dog, he learns that Kathy has become hostage in a bank robbery -
and not yet a dog, he does everything to save Kathy (and succeeds of
course), even if it costs his own life. Only when dieing does Magic turn
back into a dog ... but he is soon reborn as a puppy that Kathy is given
by a friendly neighbour (Chui Bo-Fung). The fifth and final
part of the Happy Ghost series is also the weakest, a weak
romantic comedy with supernatural elements, a dog, and jokes that are mostly of
the man acting like a dog-variety, a variety of humour that gets
pretty old pretty fast, especially when it's not done particularly well.
Good thing there never was a sixth part of the series ...
