1982: Teenage Yun (Liu Yi) is pregnant, & when it is found out, she
& the father of the unborn child, Wang Feng, are expelled from school.
Wang Feng soon enough makes preparations to move away & keep face,
while his sister Wang Zhengyue (Wang Yizhu) promises to deliver the baby.
To at least keep a little bit of face, Yun's mother Su (Li Kechun)
gives the yet unborn baby away to an acquainted couple from out of town,
while upon birth she tells her daughter that her baby died ...
10 years later: Yunm has grown up to be an attractive singer, who has
many admirers & an affair with married Liu Wanjin.
However, she has one very special admirer, 10-year old Xiao Yong (Huang
Xingrao), the son of Wang Feng's sister Wang Zhengyue, a student of her
mother's & normally nothing but truble, but he is the only one who
stays with Yun when the chips are down - like when she's beaten up by Liu
Wanjin's mother-in-law & brother-in-law.
At first, Yun thinks little of the boy, but gradually she starts to
like him, while he thinks, in Yun he has found the love of his life ...
It's only eventually that Yun's mother Su finds out - though the
audience has known all along - that Xiao Yong isn't Wang Zhengyue's son at
all, but her owbn grandchild whom she gave away upon birth ... & now
she tries to persuade Yun to get him back ... but Yun is shocked that her
mother had actually lied to her about her own child just to keep face,
& furthermore sees how Wang Zhengyue treats Xiao Yong like her old son
... she even divorced her husband to keep the child.
But somehow, Yun can't look Xiao Yong in the eyes no more & tries
to evade him, much to his dismay ...
Soon, too, Liu Wanjin has divorced his wife & marries Yun. But the
wedding celebration goes to hell when boss Qian, the village's rich man,
tries to rape Yun, & while her husband only hesitantly decides to
defend her (& gets a severe beating because for it), only Xiao Yong
firmly stands on her side ...
While Liu Wanjin recovers from the beating in hospital, Yun has their
marriage annulled & moves away for good ... even if that breaks her
heart & that of Xiao Yong ...
Well made rural drama that manages to move its tragic spiral at a slow
pace, even intercuts it with light humour at times, & presents the
audience with a well-told story - even if some twists & turns come
anything but unexpectedly (like Su, & later Yun, finding out who the
boy really is.
