It's the early days of the first Corona lockdown, and meeting one's
friends via Zoom-call is still a pretty novel thing, but Haley Bishop,
Jemma Moore, Emma Louise Webb, Radina Drandova, Caroline Ward and Edward
Linard have adapted to the new kind of communication fairly well, and for
today, they've come up with a new idea to keep things interesting even, a
virtual séance led by medium Seylan Baxter. But of course, not all of the
friends take it seriously, culminating in Jemma pretending to be haunted
by her dead boyfriend - and then the connection to Seylan breaks down, and
things get spooky in the homes of all the friends, with phenomena ranging
from knocking to inexplicable footprints, to moving furniture, and
eventually it becomes clear that whatever they have summoned hasn't come
just to scare them ... When Zoom became a thing during the
pandemic, many a filmmaker tried their hands on the new medium to just
keep making movies, if remotely. And while this versatility is of course
commendable, not all the outcome was, let's say, great. Host though
really gets things right, as it seems less forced than other movies of its
ilk, the way of storytelling is properly introduced into the story, the
script is solid, it's nicely enough filmed, and the effects really work.
Basically, if you only ever want to watch one Zoom-inspired movie, this
one might as well be it.
