As a white man, it's anything but easy to break into the martial arts
heavy Hong Kong film industry as an actor and stunt man - but Mark
Houghton did it: After studying martial arts in the Far East for years, he
somehow got to meet even then legendary filmmaker and action director Lau
Kar Leung and was given the chance to demonstrate his fighting skills to
him - and got hired on the spot to star in Lau's Aces Go Places V,
and Lau Kar Leung became his mentor. Houghton stayed in Hong Kong after
that film and found steady employ - though his roles were usually reduced
to the one of the villain's goons and basically cannonfodder to be done
away with eventually by the hero. Not content with that situation,
Houghton eventually branched out into action choreography, but eventually
the injuries that inevitably came with the job took a toll on Houghton and
he quit to concentrate on his hobby, scuba diving - until he crossed paths
with Lau Kar Leung again in 2013, only months before Lau's death, and Lau
made Houghton promise to re-enter the film industry - which he did, now
running a stunt school with an emphasis on martial arts ... White
supporting actors in Hong Kong movies are an often overlooked species,
despite their importance to the film industry, so this is a welcome
addition to the collection of every serious martial arts afficionado. And
this movie is really good at telling its story as it features tons of
clips from Mark Houghton's long film career as well as sequences from a
movie by Houghton's students to lighten things up, and most of this stuff
looks really good - also of course for nostalgia reasons. And Houghton
brings across his story engagingly and remains relatable throughout. Well
worth a look for sure!
