George (Noah Silverstone), a boy who hasn't talked ever since his mum
has died two years ago, finds a mermaid (Smilla Erlandson) washed ashore,
and he has no idea what to do - because maybe she's one of these people
who come "to our shores" that take away whatever's rightfully
"ours", one of these migrants the white nationalist group
George's brother and only friend (Ruaridh Aldington) has him introduced
into always talk about ... A very powerful short that
successfully blends realism with fairy tale elements, with each
corresponding with the other rather beautifully, and all peppered with
biting social commentary while also touching upon coming-od-age elements.
And an atmospheric directorial effort relying on strong imagery, great
landscapes and a relatable and very natural cast make this pretty much a
must-watch short.
