Cassie (Jessie Jalee) and John (Nashawn Kearse) have just gotten
married - very much to the dismay of John's mother Madelyn (LaShonda LaLa'
Courtney), who together with John's sister Missy (La Rivers) leaves out no
opportunity to let Cassie knows she's not wanted. And it especially hurts
when the two criticize Cassie's cooking, as she's a chef by profession,
and a celebrated one at that. Problem is, John doesn't really have the
balls to stand up for Cassie. Sure, he makes the occasional attempt to
keep his mother and sister in line, but fails to actually speak up to
them. And Cassie's own sister Kelly (Cherie Danielle) isn't much of a help
either, especially since she has the hots for John herself. Things get out
of bounds though when, driven by Madelyn and Missy, John has their
daughter DNA tested, despite the fact that she's his splitting image. So
eventually Cassie decides to take things into her own hands and she and
her bff Damion (Alfred E. Rutherford) take John, Madelyn, Missy and family
hostage and tie them up in Damion's basement, just to torture them a bit -
with very unexpected results ...
It might not sound like it from my synopsis alone, but The
In-Law Gang is actually a comedy - and a very fun one at that,
basically because despite of all its hyperbole, the film's basic theme of
a son unable to cut the metaphorical umbilical cord to his mother is a
very relatable one, and the kidnapping twist is something many of us have
fantasized about, whether we want to admit it or not. And that all said,
the film's still full of surprising twists and turns to keep one
interested, and colourful characters played by a competent cast sure help
as well to make this into one worthwhile comedy.
