A Martian spacecraft has crashed into a Dublin apartment building, and
now its pilot Zelog is holding the inhabitants of a flat hostage and makes
demands to world leaders - that he wants earth's top scientists to come
and repair his spaceship so he can just bugger off. It's really a very
honest and doable demand, and yet it sets off a chain reaction, because
you see, earth has welcomed Martians for years, and they proved to be a
much better workforce than we earthlings could ever be asked to be. This
of course has triggered resentments from many earthlings, and thus what
should have been an easily solvable situation turns out to be an
interplanetary diplomatic situation, and it becomes more and more apparent
those at the helm are hell-bent on steering it towards the worst possible
outcome ...
Told in the context of a news show with two constantly
bickering hosts, this can of course be viewed as a (actually pretty
hilarious) media farce, and as such despite some over-exaggerations, it
hits mostly right buttons. So basically, this film works pretty well as a
party movie - and that said, there's also a more thoughtful layer beneath,
one that's less comedy and more social satire, targeting national and
international immigration politics and the like, making its valid points
while delivering punchlines, and that's the part of the film that will
remain with you for days, maybe weeks after watching.
