Seoung-mo (Shin Seok-ho) is a young actor who has decided to try his
hands on directing, and thus takes actress Nam-hee (Kim Seung-yun) and
cameraman Sang-guk (Ha Seong-guk) out to the seaside to shoot a short in a
week or so. Both are friends of Seoung-mo, so they trust him implicitely,
but even they are concerned when, pretty much on set, they learn that
there's not only no actual script but not even an actual concept for what
the film's going to be about, and yet to find inspiration the three of
them spend most of the time location-scouting - until Seoung-mo stumbles
upon a garbage collector on the beach who finally sparks his imagination
...
In Water is not the easiest film to suggest, if first
and foremostly for the very fact that most of it was intentionally shot
out of focus, giving the film a very unfinished and overly spontaneous
feel - which is of course 100% mirrored in its story about a somewhat
clueless wannabe-filmmaker. So in a way, one's watching habits are tested
a bit - but at the same time the film is also a trip into its lead's
psyche, combined with soft satire that will speak to everyone who has ever
tried to get a movie project off the ground. Not a perfect movie perhaps,
and maybe even slightly difficult to watch, but worth a look nevertheless.
