The setting for this film is a strange fishing resort on a lake, where
the guests stay on houseboats and the only way to get ashore is by the row
boat-cum-outboard motor of its mute female owner (Suh Jung), who also
supplies the patrons with food, coffee, bait, and, if the price is right,
sexual favours.
One day a man with suicidal tendencies (Kim Yoosuk), who seems to have
a criminal past, rents a boat. The woman soon falls in love with him, for
whatever reason, and he seems to respond to her, but somehow he
misinterprets her affections for an invitation to have sex and almost
rapes her. Thinking he just want sex, the woman gets him a hooker - to
whom he at first does not respond at all ... but after a while, he and the
hooker start a relationship, and especially the hooker falls for him and
doesn't take money for sex ... much to the dismay of the mute woman.
Then though, police stops by to pick up the man, who immediately tries
to commit suicide by swallowing fish-hooks, but the woman is there in time
to first hide him from the police (submerging him under water hanging from
fishing lines), later she saves his life. After that, the man and the
woman have become a couple.
When a few days later the hooker stops by again, the woman kills her
and hides her body (and her motorbike) on the bottom of the lake. When
later that day her pimp stops by, looking for the hooker and beating up
the man, she kills him as well and, together with the man, submerges his
body too. But it is at that time that the man finds out what she has done
to the hooker, and somehow he doesn't want to be with the mute woman
anymore (and can you blame him ?) ... but he can't swim and is thus
marooned on his houseboat - until one day, when the woman stops over, he
manages to take her boat and drive off. She however takes five fish-hooks
and inserts them into her vagina (ouch), which makes him return to her and
save her life - and ultimately they are a happy couple again - until the
hookers motorbike is found on the bottom of the lake, whereupon the woman
mounts an outboard motor on the man's houseboat and the two drive off to
the open sea ...
A very quiet, yet very bizarre movie that is pretty much unlike
everything else you have ever seen. Actually the weird setting of the film
alone is almost worth the admission, and the story, that takes full
advantage of the setting is just wonderful and creates a world all of its
own (the film by the way never moves away from the lake- and
lakeside-sets). The imagery of the film is impressive without being
spectacular, and it perfectly catches the overall mood of this weird and
wonderful love-story.
Highest recommendation !!!
(Animal lovers however might want to stay away from the film, as it
shows some drastic scenes of fish-mutilation and the drowning of a bird.)
