Andre (Ivan Djurovic) has been in an accident recently that has left
him with a concussion and a partial loss of memory - but really nothing
serious, he just needs some rest and relaxation for a few days, and more
likely he'll not only be as good as new, his memory will also have
returned. So his best friend Robert (Rick Irwin) gets him a housesitting
gig in a vast place in a silent neighbourhood - just what the doctor
ordered, even if the place seems a tad spooky, what with all those creepy
mannequins covered in sheets that make them look like ghosts? Andre
invites Rachel (Sanny van Heteren), a girl he has been seeing before the
accident, over for dinner, and everything works out great ... until Guy
(James Duval) stops over, claiming he's a neighbour and warning them of
some escaped convicts. He then gets Andre to leave for another part of the
house under a pretense and when Andre returns Rachel is gone, and Guy
claims she just got up and left - but Andre thinks (and the audience
knows) Guy had something to do with Rachel's disappearance, and he throws
him out of the house. But here things get weird, as Andre investigates the
house some more and finds a ton of photos of Rachel that just shouldn't be
there - and at first he believes this to be a hoax set up by Robert, but
Robert assures him no. And from here on things go downhill as Andre finds
more and more evidence he's not alone in the house, he tries to leave but
is chased back inside by ... who- or whatever it was actually. And he
finds a brutal torture video that might suggest what has happened to
Rachel - and when one thinks it couldn't get any worse, it does ... It
Follows is a mighty tense movie that fortunately takes its time to set
up the story, but once it's going full steam it leaves the audience on the
edges of their seats, thanks to a directorial effort and camerawork that
get the most out of their limited locations, a fittingly eerie score, a
fortunate decision to by and large stay away from pure spectacle and
instead focus on proper mindfucking, and last but not least a very solid
cast. And all of this results in one of the tensest movies of the year for
sure.
