Ever since he's been a young lad and witnessing the death of his mother
(Catherine Travelletti), Jasper (Gilles Perret, Alexis Verville as a
youngster) hasn't been himself, to the point where he started to imagine
his ghostly mentor Karl (Francis Rossier, voiced by Tiu H. Vogel).
Eventually, he stumbles across a woman who has been left for dead in some
backstreets, takes her in and takes care of her, also because she reminds
him of his mother. But what he doesn't know is that that woman's actually
part of a criminal plot he himself might be an essential piece in, and
that Karl might not be quite as imaginary as Jasper had originally assumed
...
Now on the plus-side, Jasper's rather labyrinthine
structure is quite fascinating, its looks are incredibly slick (also but
not only thanks to great vintage sets and props), and it's beautifully
edited - but the film's problem is that its story gets lost in the
process. So it looks and feels good, but in the end, one has little idea
what the movie might have been about. That though doesn't mean the film
isn't interesting, because it very much is, it just leaves one a bit
under-satisfied going out ...
