Teenaged Needy (Amanda Seyfried) is a bit of a nerd, but she's best
friends with Jennifer (Megan Fox), who tends to take her to all the cool
events in town - well, as cool as possible in an insignificant town like
Devil's Kettle. And when a charting indie band called Low Shoulder
actually plays at the local diner, of course Jennifer brings Needy. But
the concert doesn't go quite as planned, as the venue burns down, killing
quite a few audience members. Jennifer and Needy survive though, and since
Jennifer has caught the eye of the band's front man Nikolai (Adam Brody),
she's invited into their tour bus - despite Needy's warnings. Later that
night, Jennifer shows up all bruised and battered, and she vomits blood
before leaving again. The next day at school is a day of mourning, as
pretty much everybody has lost somebody they knew in a fire - only
Jennifer is beaming. Later that day, she seduces the school's jock in the
woods right behind the school ... and then brutally kills him and eats
from his flesh. A few days later, she does the same to an emo kid (Kyle
Gallner). Nobody suspects her of course, but eventually she opens up to
Needy and tells her that back on the day of the fire the band wanted to
sacrifice her to Satan under the assumption that she was a virgin - which
of course couldn't have been less true, and now she's possessed by a demon
and has to feed on human flesh. Of course that's mighty disturbing to
Needy, even if Jennifer promises her she'd never feed on her best friend.
But Needy starts to do research on Jennifer's condition, and when the
school dance comes up, he does her best to come prepared - but what she
doesn't know is that Jennifer isn't even going to the dance but tries to
get it on with Needy's boyfriend Chip (Johnny Simmons) - and once Needy
figures that might happen she runs all over town to hunt them down and
best Jennifer in a showdown. But is Needy even capable enough to do that? Now
this is a film with a great finale, it's visually impressive,
well-choreographed, and really keeps one at the edge of one's seat - but
unfortunately, the movie leading to it is much less so, it really seems
that horror elements have just been thrown together rather randomly, and
with no real concern about story structure, build-up of tension, or
believability even (given the suspension of belief the genre demands
already), and there are plotholes aplenty. And all of this is a shame, as
the direction's solid, as is the cast, but without a proper story the film
just fails to work.
