Not long ago in the future, a planet just dropped into our solar system
and became the closest planet to earth. And on first look, it seems very
similar to earth, too, so the Americans send up a rocketship with four
explorers (William Bryant, Wanda Curtis, Douglas Henderson, Patti
Gallagher) to investigate ... and they find a planet, just like earth,
including its fauna and flora - but unfortunately, earth a few million
years ago. And the first thing our scientists do is getting lost in the
woods, so after making the acquaintance of a crocodile and a giant insect
it's not long before our fearless foursome is on the run from giant
dinosaurs and all other sorts of giant animals. Eventually, our heroes get
so fed up with the situation that they explode an atom bomb ... King
Dinosaur was cult director Bert I. Gordon's directorial debut - and no
matter how fond or unfond you are of him, not among his better films.
Basically, the science underlying the movie is off even by 1950's sci-fi
standards, the budget is just really low for the story the film's
telling, so all this film amounts to is getting 4 random people out in the
woods to not even pretend they're anything but hikers, and as for the
special effects - to have some iguanas and caymans pose as dinosaurs in
back projections and/or bluebox sequences is one thing, but to identify
something that is clearly not as a tyrannosaurus rex is pushing things.
Plus, the atom bomb ending? - really suggests there was simply some stock
footage handy, and/or the writers were a really lazy bunch. Well, I
might be a bit on the strict side here, there's still plenty to find
amusing about this film, it's just definitely not great on one side, and
too lazy an effort to qualify as a drive-in schlock classic on the other.
