Of late, Nathan (Art Hall), rather overweight due to comfort-eating
after the separation from Cindy (C. Ashleigh Caldwell), has hit the race
track of late to get at least a bit into shape again - with moderate
success. But then he meets lovely Stephanie (Rachae Thomas), who's in much
better shape than him but has a similar separation behind her, and both of
them have a child each from their former relationship - so (after some
embarrassing attempts by Nathan to pick her up) they feel an instant
connecton, and being with Stephanie alone encourages Nathan to lose quite
a few extra pounds. The two of them eventually become a couple, but their
relationship is anything but rosey: Nathan loses his job as a comicstrip
artist and is more than likely to bury the frustration in alcohol, food
and the occasional cigar, with all the side effects, Stephanie is a
talented singer/songwriter who's unable to overcome her shyness, and all
of Nathan's attempts to help only backfire, Stephanie's ex Joe (Daisun
Cohn-Williams) shows up at the race track to win her back, and manages to
provoke Nathan in pure bully-manner, and to be quite honest, even though
he thinks he has, Nathan hasn't quite come over the separation from Cindy
yet ... Now Laps originally saw the light of day as a
webseries, which readily explains its somewhat episodic structure -
however, that episodic structure also helps to give the characters more
depth, more backstory and also more layers, making this, instead of a
linear romantic comedy along the lines of
boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl-boy-wins-girl-for-good into much more of a
rollercoaster ride of emotions, with all characters having their flaws,
making mistakes, and ultimately not a happy ending for everybody. And
thanks to a likeable cast and a subtle directorial effort, the film really
gets its point across!
