Carla (Amanda Pitzer) runs from an abusive relationship that has her
black-eyed and scarred ... and then her car breaks down in the middle of
nowhere, and being stranded as she is, she has no choice but to accept a
lift from a stranger, Max (Kevin Kunkel) - and he sure proves to be an
oddball - but not in the creepy, sleazeball kind of way Carla had
expected, as Max has the habit to leave large chunks of money behind in
lunch boxes at every place he tends to go, money that will lead the life
of the person who's supposed to find it in the right direction. And that
said, every time Max has left a lunch box, he doesn't stay around to
experience the results but rather runs as if he has committed the worst of
crimes. And now he has made Carla his accomplice - who could need a push
to get onto the right track as well ... At heart, Last Exit
to Jupiter is of course an unapologetic feelgood movie, as you might
have guessed from above synopsis - but it's not half as cheesy as it may
sound, putting its focus on storytelling and the mystery surrounding the
whole thing rather than the premise itself, and giving its characters
nuances that make them more than just do-gooders and persons in need, to a
point of blurring the difference between those two. And competent
performances and a relaxed and kitsch-free direction certainly help to
bring the movie's points across.
