Lattie (Kevin Chenault) just loves the depressive lifestyle, loves his
little quirks, his dependance on drugs and alcohol ... but now it has
gotten serious, since he's got some terminal illness or other, and only
surgery might be the cure, something he's deadly afraid of. Of course, he
might also imagine all of this to feel more miserable than he does ... But
that's not the only reason his life goes off the rail, he also finds a
murdered woman and leaves fingerprints at the scene of the crime which
make police detective Jeff (Charles Aldridge) come back to him again and
again - and his very unobstrusive behaviour alone drives Lattie almost
insane. Now add to that the victim's two nephews (Gabriel King Neville,
Alex Wallwork) who have gotten his name due to a police blunder, which
drives him from his home, an over-caring yet not understanding family he
finds himself having to live with, the dead woman's hidden stash of money
he feels bad to use for himself, and frequent black-outs, and you've got -
a guy going through living hell, pretty much ... Lattie's
most certainly not a movie for everyone as it walks the fine line between
the blackest of humour and the bleakest of drama, and does it very well,
but at a (fittingly) slow pace, with spots of slapstick and surrealism,
resembling a cross between genre cinema and Woody Allen in his darkest of
days, but done truly indie style. What I'm trying to say here, I'm sure
not everyone will be getting the movie's slowburn humour, its need for
slow pacing, its co-existence of utter tragedy and sheer sarcasm - but
those who so will probably love this one quite a bit!
