In a probably not-too-distant future, heat has become even more
blistering than now and humankind is suffering from drastic water
shortages, with special agents from the Resource Enforcement Agency
enforcing these shortages rigorously. Young Loban (Ben Richardson) though
has found a way to siphon off a little extra water - not so much for
himself but for his deaf mother (Rita Scranton), whom he just can't stand
withering away from dehydration. But in times like these it's only a
question of time before someone finds out and snitches, because what could
be more important than being on good terms with the Resource
Enforcement Agency ...
A very compelling short that manages to pack quite a lot into
its barely eight minutes of running time, and it does so by not wasting
any time with explanations but successfully paints a picture by mere
gestures and hints, trusting the (mostly genre-trained) audience to guess
the backstory on their own, and instead concentrating on its narrative
core, which really is about a son loving his mother and the lengths he'll
go for it. And thanks to a genre-savvy direction that also shows a lot of
heart, and strong, relatable performances, this comes to life rather
beautifully.
